Opera Ontario Chorus
"Since 1987 I have had the privilege of being the Chorus Master for Opera Ontario. The Opera Ontario Chorus can best be described as a happy family of devoted amateurs who love to sing and act, and do it for the joy of creating an extraordinary operatic experience. The members come from all walks of life – teachers, engineers, students, retirees, clergy, accountants, bank executives and many other professions. They bring with them a wealth of experience and enthusiasm that during a production is focused on creating the best possible results on stage. During rehearsals and performances, laughter and hard work are the key ingredients that motivate this tireless group. Their motto seems to be one of taking their work, not themselves, seriously. Many of them have sung in over forty productions and some have been with the company for more than twenty-five years. Some of them volunteer even more of their time, helping us out with Education and Outreach programs in schools and in the community. They all have fond memories of certain productions and moments – some triumphant and some nail biting. Otello springs to mind, when at the beginning of the opera, the full chorus is singing with the full orchestra, but the curtain did not rise. They soldiered on in perfect time without the benefit of the conductor until the curtain finally did go up. Although certain productions stand out in my memory, each of them is special because of the chorus who make my work such a pleasure."
